This refers to the report “Babus in poll fray, EC asks govt to bar them” (January 29). It is good to know that the Election Commission has taken cognisance of the increasing number of babus entering politics immediately after retirement. Similarly, will it not be appropriate to prevent governors and speakers, too, from returning to active politics immediately after their tenure is over? Though these are political appointments, the office of a governor or a speaker is expected to be impartial. And so if a governor or a speaker returns to politics or contests an election on a particular party’s ticket immediately after demitting office, how can one be sure that he or she had not favoured this particular party earlier?
