The praise for ITC chairman Yogesh Deveshwar in the edit “Unique Mr Deveshwar” (June 15) is well-deserved. A five-year extension after a 15-year term as executive chairman is telling and shows that it is the company that needs him more than the other way round.
Deveshwar is indeed in a class of his own. So are some other executives like L&T Chairman A M Naik and Delhi Metro Chief E Sreedharan, popularly known as the “metro-man”. These corporate leaders are outstanding performers and team-managers. Much of a company’s success depends on teamwork and how a capable leader guides and drives his team. India needs leaders like these in the domain of governance too.
