In her column "The tragedy of being average" (People Like Them, March 1) Geetanjali Krishna has said that only high-scoring students survive the competitive nature of the education sector. But the author has not given any alternative for average students, also forgetting that getting a job is more about the attitude and readiness of a candidate to deliver rather than a degree. Hence preparing yourself for a job by gaining experience in a relevant sector of interest is more important than focusing only on degrees. As far as graduation is concerned, there are universities such as the Indira Gandhi National Open University and other open-school options that are recognised across India. In the major information technology hubs of India, students passing out from school try to enter relevant technology courses, according to the market demand, such as SAP and .NET in institutes that also arrange for live-project experience on a subcontracting basis. They also join open schools to simultaneously complete their graduation. Hence, they become market relevant and ready for employment.
