Your editorial “Confusion confounded”, Dec 17, has asked the right question: Why did the Central government announce the decision to set up a new state of Telengana? The Congress Party did not campaign on the promise of a separate state; the TRS did that, but the TRS was decimated decisively in the elections.
That means the electorate in the state is not in favour of a separate state. So, the Central government cannot say its decision was taken keeping in mind the popular mandate. It would be interesting to know what the government was thinking when it okayed the move, and what it is thinking now that it is backtracking equally fast.
