The news that banks are all set to hire 200,000 banking correspondents (“200,000 recruits to bring banks to your doorstep”, January 19) is very good news as it means unbanked areas of India will finally get access to banks. Till now, banks were reluctant to open branches in rural areas for two reasons — they got very little business and it was difficult to find staffers to fill up posts. With banking correspondents who can be the village kirana shop, this will no longer be a constraint. The kirana shop will operate as the bank’s branch in small villages as well.
