Ajai Shukla’s profile of K Santhanam (‘Figures do not lie’, September 28), India’s nuclear whistleblower, gives the game away. It is reasonably clear that if Santhanam is saying India does not have thermonuclear capabilities, India cannot be signing international treaties that take away its right to test further. The idea is to tell the Americans that India has a domestic lobby which is not happy with the Indo-US treaty as it stands and this lobby is not going to stand for India signing any other treaties which put further restrictions on it.
