This refers to T C A Srinivasa-Raghavan's column "Two suggestions for Ms Irani" (Marginal Utility, June 28). We indeed need to drastically overhaul our education system. There is a crying need to bring the system out of the hard-headed and vice-like grip of the babus, on everything from the curriculum to the infra-structure required. Also, the contribution of these so-called educationists to the management of education is so far removed from reality that education in India has ceased to be relevant to the contemporary requirements of the society. We need to free up education and let it evolve in a natural way, so that it becomes a useful aspect of overall healthy development of the next generation. As a start, it may be useful to scrap the straight-jacketed programmes such as SSC/HSC/BA and so on, and instead offer short modules, so that students can build up a portfolio of qualifications of their own choice.
