The government reduced prices of fuel just before the elections and has now raised them at a time when the wholesale price inflation is very low. So, the move will not result in higher inflation levels. What the government is not aware of is that consumers do not look at the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), only economists do that. So, whether the WPI goes up or down, we consumers know that prices are going up. And the recent round of fuel-price hikes will only fuel inflation.
If the government is so interested in saving fuel, it needs to develop more metros and improve the quality of public transport. When the public transport system is virtually non-existent, we have no choice but to travel in our two-wheelers and cars, and now we have to pay more for that.
