In the article "Natural-born business (Swot, May 7) Kanika Datta has correctly warned "concerned Indians" about what is in the offing, especially when one reflects on what happened in 1992 with the Babri Masjid. Starting in July 1991, Narasimha Rao's leadership, with the astute advice of then Finance Minister Manmohan Singh, was well on the shining path of economic liberalisation. Unfortunately, within a year, saffron mobs demolished the Babri Masjid. The economic cost of that event, which has resulted in serial violence in and around India, has not been estimated, but it may run into billions of dollars. India will face similar problems in the coming years, no matter how many slogans of economic development Narendra Modi pronounces at his rallies.
