The Maharashtra government has set up a high-powered committee to speed up the various SEZ projects in the state. The government claims that the projects will generate 66 lakh jobs and attract an investment of Rs 180,000 crore. If these figures are correct, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan should really make the committee work and not let it remain inactive like so many other committees. In today’s recessionary environment, the state will benefit greatly from the proposed SEZs.
Unfortunately, the state’s record in this area over the past decade is the most disappointing. Chavan will have to prove his mettle. This is a golden opportunity for him. Besides enhancing his image, such a proposal will promote the state’s prospects as well.
