This refers to the editorial “Not their fault” (May 27). I would like to add that in India we give research a very low priority. This is evident right at the elementary school level, where the spirit of questioning and original thinking are not encouraged. Children in schools and colleges should be encouraged to undertake projects that involve research in their fields of interest. If we remain backward in research, we may not be able to compete with other countries in innovations, inventions and Intellectual Property Rights. Jairam Ramesh should be congratulated for initiating a debate over the quality of teaching in India. But will something good come out of it?
