The edit “Institutional integrity” (October 11) focused on the need to save institutions responsible for governance from the negative impact of protests. Even as the concern and anxiety expressed in your edit are well-placed, it is doubtful whether we can achieve the desired results by merely disciplining the likes of Anna Hazare, Arundhati Roy and Arvind Kejriwal. The movements they have been able to mobilise are eruptive symptoms of a decaying system that is inefficient in essence. Another mature group of veterans comprising Narayanan Vaghul, Bimal Jalan and Azim Premji, among others, that has been more disciplined and polite while expressing their disagreement is also not satisfied with the present state of affairs when it comes to governance. A strong political will to respect the Constitution and the law of the land should come as a convincing statement from the top, expressed through transparent actions to ensure distributive justice without undue delay.
