This refers to ‘Needing to let go’ (October 13), a very sensitive account of what is going through the mind of financial sector doyen Deepak Parekh. It is important that Parekh retires since the younger generation also needs to be able to run HDFC. It is, however, criminal to allow talent such as Parekh’s to go waste. While a Parekh will still get absorbed in various government committees, a more viable solution needs to be found for retiring managers who, thanks to improved health, remain as fit as they were 20 years ago. One solution, tried in countries like the US, is to have volunteer groups manned by these CEOs who are then available as mentors for small and medium enterprises, not just in the US but even across the world. That way the CEOs’ talent does not get wasted and they too feel wanted.
