Apropos the editorial “Passing the Test” (December 12), blaming the Indian Premier League tournament for the problems faced by the Indian cricket team currently is valid — but only partly. All along, we have refrained from preparing cricket pitches that will help pace bowlers. We are over-dependent on our spin bowlers. Thus, our record of wins abroad is not good, since our batsmen often fail to perform well against pace attacks. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has refused to act on this lacuna. Our selection process, whether of the captain or of an individual player, is not always based on the overall assessment. We have illogical yardstick for inclusion or exclusion of a player. We still lack a good statistical or any other analytical tool to assess a player’s performance. If BCCI wants to change this scenario, it can do a lot, but who would bell the cat?
