The editorial “The lessons of Manesar” (July 23) doesn’t address the issue of workers hired through contractors. Contract workers are given a pittance by their contractors and face wilful neglect at the hands of management. If only Maruti Suzuki India Limited’s HR management policy had been revised in consultation with the workers’ union to devise better measures in the workers’ interest, the arson and consequent lockout could have been avoided.
Dissatisfaction among workers had been brewing for a long time but nobody anticipated its terrible consequences, which claimed the life of a Maruti official. We must quickly evolve corrective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
