With reference to Archis Mohan’s report, “BJP to use surgical strikes as its chief plank in UP polls” (October 14), it does not augur well for the Bharatiya Janata Party to chalk out such an ill-conceived electoral plan aimed at driving home the message of the “political will” by the Narendra Modi government.
This move gives the impression that these “surgical strikes” against Pakistani terror camps were given the go-ahead by the government with the sole intention of reaping a rich political harvest later in all the poll-bound states.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has been seeking some praise for the National Democratic Alliance government for the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army on September 29. Was the government not duty-bound to do so? Actually, the credit should go to the brave soldiers, who risked their lives to serve the national interest.
Pitching the “surgical strikes” as the BJP’s main election plank for the 2017 Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh may boomerang on the party.
Trying to cash in on sentimental issues to garner votes is imprudent. The electorate may not pay heed to such moves, with regional and local issues likely weighing more on their minds. Is BJP chief Amit Shah and company listening.
