This refers to the editorial "Russian roulette" (December 11). Russia and India have been known collaborators for decades. To a lesser extent, of course, the US and the rest. Narendra Modi continues to adhere to "non-alignment" with a brand of detached attitude but with a sense of positivism; as Russia is a "best" friend, so is the US by now. Modi wants to get the best out of every friend or foe and functions in the best interests of the country, knowing full well that "friendship" is a floating phenomenon. When the going is good, strike the deals, he seemingly believes.

If "defence to diamond will feature in Modi-Putin bilateral meet", be it so because India should look for commercial ties in defence, energy and diamond with the best suited country for the purpose. In the long-run, the Ukraine skirmishes at this juncture will become a passing event. Let us not forget that Modi may look outwardly critical of Jawaharlal Nehru, but he adheres to Nehru's non-alignment for political neutrality but aligns, positively, with a commercially well-suited country for all economic ties.
