Siddartha Roy in his well-written column "Flexible inflation targeting needed" (Expert Take, September 30) had advocated a reduction in the rate of interest by the Reserve Bank India in the overall interest of growth and to avoid a deflationary situation. But Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan thought otherwise. Rajan has his hand on the pulse of the people. He, it appears, knows that "inflation is a silent robber" that mercilessly robs the fixed income group, the retired people whose number is increasing by the day and the people living below the poverty line. These groups will not be less than 60 per cent of the population.
The government must take some positive and urgent measures to take care of the supply side. We need to remember that continuous high inflation is the biggest enemy of democracy.
