The number of senior-level exits at Infosys has taken a number of observers by surprise. The company has - as guided - continued to languish over the last year, with lesser breeds grabbing its share of the pie and teaching it new tricks. The company has even gone to the extent of saying it will continue to languish for another few quarters. It is surprising, therefore, that the chief executive officer who has presided over the company's secular decline is still calling the shots, even as the top management cadre has bailed, with or without parachutes. And this brings us to an important question: is the manager to blame, or those who hired him? And in their heart of hearts, what were their main considerations? Multinational companies are by their very nature open about the background of people who reach the upper echelons of management. Can N R Narayana Murthy make Infosys less judgmental?
