This refers to the edit “Infosys gets a jolt” (April 16). The IT sector, like defence and aviation, should come in the high risk, high profit category. And, thus, policy guidance for it needs to factor in phases like the one in which Infosys is today. The service industry and the country have been over jubilant after the initial gains made during the formative years.
The sagging morale of the sector’s workforce as a result of the gloomy outlook from the top does not augur well for the journey forward. If Infosys does not prevent the current situation from developing into a crisis by taking its manpower into confidence, the IT sector may see a brain drain. The entire financial sector, most industries and customer service, are dependent on IT services. Any dilution in IT support would impact progress. Even for the IT sector, a speed breaker at this stage would be suicidal since this is the time when top bosses in the sector are talking about penetrating tier-III and tier-IV towns.
