This refers to Shyamal Majumdar's column "Bank boards as 'NPAs'" (Human Factor, May 23). Public sector bank (PSB) boards discussing trivial issues in their meetings shows the lack of decentralisation in decision-making. Delayed decision-making is one of the major reasons for the deteriorating performance of PSBs. There are many reasons for this delay - interference from the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), Right to Information (RTI), and political interference. There is an urgent need to look at these matters, so that the decision-making can become smoother. On the other hand, absolving these banks from the purview of CVC and RTI may not be possible if the government is the majority stakeholder in these banks.
