With reference to “Death of a session” (December 19), my compliments to Business Standard for a hard-hitting editorial! The grossly irresponsible and disgraceful behaviour of Opposition parties during the winter session of Parliament is shocking. Admittedly, it is not the first time that our lawmakers have misbehaved. Yet, the crucial timing of the session and importance of the bills held up makes their actions unpardonable.

That even the anguish and exhortation of the President had no effect on them speaks volumes about their utter lack of responsibility to the electorate. In this context Baijayant Panda’s symbolic offer to forego prorated salaries for time wasted makes eminent sense. It is sad that this was summarily rejected by several honourable members on the pretext of not being so affluent. That is the least all MPs could have done to redeem themselves for the colossal losses to the nation. Such happenings in the country’s apex lawmaking body make a mockery of the government’s efforts to and claims of making India a great democracy. We hope better sense prevails in the parliamentary next session.
