“The Jalan solution” (June10) should be adopted at the very earliest. If the allied parties of a coalition are to be treated as members of one political party, they too will be disqualified once they withdraw support from the alliance. This will, as you have pointed out, ensure coalitions are stable in nature and that no coalition partner can then afford to blackmail the government.
What is not clear, however, is how this is to be implemented. If this requires a constitutional amendment, no political party will support it and it will never get through — this is the reason why the women’s reservation Bill has not been passed even though the Congress party and the BJP are both in favour of it. If, on the other hand, it is something that can be done by an executive decision, this is something the alliance partners will not let the government do this. You have come up with a solution that is novel, but its implementation looks near impossible.
