This refers to 'Can Nitish swing Bihar', March 21. The general feeling is that the JD(U) will return to power now that there is in-fighting among the various constituents of the UPA. Except for some resentment over relief measures after the Kosi floods, Nitish Kumar’s government has brought the rule of law to Bihar. But the JD(U) has ill-treated veteran socialist leader George Fernandes by denying him a ticket. Granted that he has not been keeping well, the senior JD (U) leaders should have had the decency to discuss the matter with him. Both Nitish Kumar and Sharad Yadav must not forget that George was their mentor. On the other hand, they are trying to humiliate him.

George Fernandes, for his part, should have emulated Atal Bihari Vajpayee and retired from electoral politics, considering his age and health. It would have been a lot more graceful.
