The government should have invoked ESMA long ago when the Jet Airways pilots went on strike. Airlines are a public utility and there is little justification for pilots who earn upwards of Rs 4 lakh a month to resort to such blackmail. When poor wage-labourers go on strike, the government is quick to threaten to invoke ESMA or even bring in the army and navy to man their positions. How come nothing of the sort was done this time around?
