The Uri attack, in which 17 Indian soldiers were killed in the border town, is shocking, if not shameful. Something appears to be seriously wrong with the selection, induction, training and management of our defence system.

Sophisticated and costly equipment and gadgets are meaningless in the hands of those who are not fit and are not well-trained and disciplined to handle them. When discussions take place on privileges, perquisites and pensions, attention may also be paid to these vital issues.

Emphasis on mere numbers in terms of corps, brigades and battalions may not result in creating a strong army. The government may not hesitate to seek assistance from friendly countries on training and organisational matters. There is no point in blaming Pakistan for the glaring lapses on our part.
