This refers to the editorial “Go for no-go” (January 7). The government machinery is increasingly becoming either incapable or unwilling or both to enforce laws. India seems to have the best possible environment laws in place. But their enforcement has been lacking. It is disturbing that many people are up in arms against the environment minister when he says he is only trying to ensure that existing laws are complied with. The suggestion of setting up an independent regulator, therefore, may not work unless we as a nation are willing to abide by laws.
