This refers to Sanjaya Baru’s piece “Institutions matter” (August 1). The monsoon session of Parliament is perhaps more about the opposition than the government in power. The nation has seen the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expound on every aspect of the United Progressive Alliance’s misgovernance, on television sets and on the streets but not in Parliament. We are yet to see what alternatives and solutions the BJP offers on the floor of the House. The country’s largest opposition party ought to realise that staging walkouts or creating disorder in Parliament, as it did in the winter session, will only help the ruling party get away without having to answer for any of its actions. It remains to be seen whether the BJP can put the prime minister and his government under intense scrutiny while maintaining decorum. This will reflect the sagacity of not only the BJP, but also of our polity.
