This refers to 'Redefining the term rich' in the weekend edition (February 14). True riches lie in the mind whereas material wealth is restricted to the body. True riches lie in contentment where the desire is to lead a meaningful and comfortable life with peace of mind, where lack of greed gains foremost importance. It is true that the pay packages of present day chief executive officers, professionals and bankers are too high, but the work tension and consequent health problems more than negate their monetary inflow.

Occupying positions of power and living life mechanically is an indication of mental poverty despite material wealth. The spiritual beauty behind true wealth is unknown to such people. Increase in technology has also deprived the younger generation of a qualitative, knowledgeable and interactive outdoor life which is destructive to our social fabric.

Although technology has contributed to greater global connectivity, we should not allow machines to dominate our lives. It is the human brain from which technology developed and not the other way round. Accordingly, although the possession of material wealth will end with physical life, mental riches will always carry permanent memories of the person.
