A K Bhattacharya's column "How Mr Mitra fixed Bengal's finances" (New Delhi Diary, March 19) was very informative. It shows what an efficient and dedicated administrator can do and achieve. The punchline of the column was "All that he did was to move towards online collection of taxes... in order to plug gaps and revenue leakage". The gross collection of indirect taxes in FY10-11 was Rs 20,000 crore. In FY12-13, the realistic estimate for collection is more than Rs 40,000 crore. This has been possible largely by plugging the leakages. More power to Amit Mitra's elbow!
