I watched Narendra Modi's speech at Madison Square Garden, New York, with some friends in Washington D C. The speech was like a sermon - it looked serious but it also looked risky for India. The speech showed Modi's overconfidence in his philosophy, which has not yet passed the test of time in modernising India. The speech also did not recognise leaders who have contributed to information technology, and the green and white revolutions in India. Also, the coverage in the mainstream media in the US has been poor. As far as global events are concerned, the US media is preoccupied with what is happening in Hong Kong and Islamic State troubles.
Modi did not clearly specify how the partnership with India will be useful to the US, when his government has banned research on genetically-modified crops, foreign direct investment in retail trade, and has opposed free trade by maintaining massive food subsidies.
