This refers to Aditi Phadnis' column "Leading from the front?" (Plain Politics, April 25). As Gujarat chief minister, Narendra Modi's autocratic style and holier-than-thou attitude might have succeeded in the state but they might not fit with the politics at the national level.

As chief minister, it was easy for Modi to handle one state. But now he has to deal with so many states; some of them ruled by the Opposition parties can be hard nuts to crack. Similarly, Modi has to monitor the working of numerous ministries. Their inept handling could cost him heavily.

There is no doubt that Modi needs to be a hard taskmaster to deliver his electoral promises. But he must avoid treating his Cabinet as a coffle. Ministers must be made to feel responsible in the government. Otherwise they will feel unwanted and prove to be a liability rather than an asset
