This refers to the editorial “Beyond the fog of spin” (December 21). Narendra Modi has almost single-handedly managed to win the elections for a third time in a row. No one has questioned the economic achievements of Gujarat under him. But the issue is whether his growth is excluding the poor — as also the minorities. Apparently, if we impartially examine the issue, we’ll find that his growth model is faulty and needs modifications.

Besides, why does the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP’s) total votes hover around 50 per cent, despite the party winning a comfortable majority of over 63 per cent of Assembly seats in 2007 and 2012? I believe the BJP needs to examine its governance model, if it considers that it can effectively replicate that in other states. Also, if Modi wishes to be an acceptable politician nationally, he should offer an unconditional apology to the people, just as our prime minister offered for the Congress government’s failure to act after the 1984 riots in Delhi. Yes, it was offered much later, and it might appear to some to be a tokenism, but an honest apology is the only way out.
