“North or South, TV viewers speak one language” (November 30) is a nice bit of information. In the 1970s and 1980s, this role was performed by Bollywood, and actors like Amitabh Bachchan were able to cut across the language barrier and establish themselves in the hearts of audiences across the country. For some reason, however, well-established south Indian actors like Rajnikant were not able to make the same impact in north India.
While audiences across the country are all watching TV, their preferences are quite distinct in terms of the kind of soap operas they watch. Even now, TRPs for “national TV channels” are much lower than those for “regional channels” in most areas. This is something that the national media as well as media planners would do well to keep in mind.
