This refers to the your editorial "A wasted moment" (August 21). New Delhi's decision to call off talks with Pakistan seems to be nothing but a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s strategy to woo a section of voters in its "Mission 44" pertaining to the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections. The BJP may win the battle of elections this way but it could lose the war of securing peace on the borders. The issue of Pakistan's representative in New Delhi meeting Kashmiri separatist leaders, if necessary, could have been raised during bilateral talks.
Keeping the channels of dialogue open with Pakistan is imperative, considering the turmoil that the civilian government over there is undergoing currently. The BJP should realise that a stable neighbour is more important than securing a win in the state Assembly elections.
