With reference to Alnoor Peermohamed's report, "Don't write my obit yet: Rajan" (June 23), it is unfortunate that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor had to say this himself, as his term ends not before September and he would visit India regularly even after he moves to the US to teach.

Rajan must have felt hurt when he said, "I read these obituaries in the paper, I'm still alive. So don't write me off." Does this not indicate that Rajan was treated with unusual contempt by vested interests in a section of the media? After all, "paid news" can't be ruled out these days although the names of those benefiting from such practices need not be spelt out.

But in all fairness, it would be futile to look back and try to find out the real causes that prompted Rajan to step down. In any case, everything concerning his exit is in the public domain now.

In all this, the way in which the government and the Bharatiya Janata Party have rushed to "defend" Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian leads one to wonder if he might be chosen the next governor of the RBI. There is no smoke without fire. But let's wait and watch what happens.
