Apropos the editorial “Not a grain of sense” (December 20), the Food Security Bill was passed by the Cabinet in haste because it is directly linked to a welfare scheme that is close to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s heart. With elections imminent in UP, Punjab and Uttarakhand, the Congress did not want to lose this golden opportunity to portray itself as the messiah of the poor. But considering our precarious fiscal deficit and poor food storage infrastructure, the Bill does not make economic sense. Ultimately, the taxpayer will bear the burden of pleasing the poor. How ironic.
