This refers to the report "Japan commits $35 bn investment in India" (September 2). India was expecting to clinch a nuclear deal for power generation during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Japan but missed it this time also. Even after six years of signing a civilian nuclear treaty, not a single nuclear project has come up.
Without self-sufficiency in the power sector, investment in other areas is meaningless. The government should stop going to other nations for nuclear power equipment and emphasise developing the fast breeder technology and use of thorium. There is no dearth of resources, technology, skill and funds - the only thing lacking is political will.
