In his article “The empty seat” (Ticker, July 21), Mihir S Sharma suggests it is inappropriate to term Rahul Gandhi a “political novice” in view of his nearly eight years of parliamentary experience. I think much depends on the quality rather than the tenure of experience. Equally important is the interest a person shows in the job while undergoing the experience.

Rahul Gandhi’s legislative contribution has been marginal with no sparks of genius. After the failure of leadership in the Uttar Pradesh elections, Rahul Gandhi retired to a cocoon. He works sporadically, has not evolved a vision of his own and is reluctant to share it with his nation. Besides, he is surrounded by sycophants, who rationalise his failures, and this does not allow him to introspect and improve.
