This refers to the edited excerpts from Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's opening statement in the Lok Sabha pertaining to the Payment and Settlement System (Amendment) Bill, 2014, "The backbone of all financial transactions" (Opinion, December 15). First of all, we must appreciate the way the Opposition listened, understood, debated and then took into consideration such an important Bill. We must also appreciate the foresight of this government that wants to safeguard the interest of citizens who use the services of payment gateways such as Paytm, PayPal, Freecharge and so on.
Though the amendment was a bit difficult to understand for the layman, Jaitley expressed it very lucidly and with illustration. This amendment is really the need of the hour, considering the current scenario where customers prefer to make online payments or shop via the internet.
