Apropos the editorial "City of mobs" (October 5), our puranas eulogise white as the ideal colour and describe it in glowing terms, including the hiranyakeshi or the golden haired. One only needs to go through the matrimonial columns to realise this fascination for light skin. Dark skin is passed off as a "wheat complexion". Our television advertisements and, of course, movies feature mostly light-skinned as actors and models. It is rare to see a dark-skinned personality. Surprisingly, we are offended and term others racist when they single us out for our saris or bindis.
