This refers to the editorial “Bottomline in Pakistan” (March 10). Thanks to its geopolitical position, arising from US’ war in Iraq and now Afghanistan, Pakistan has achieved a unique feat in international relations: instead of being dominated by its benefactors, it has succeeded in manipulating them to fulfil its India-centric goals. The US is compelled to pump enormous aid despite knowing that a good part of it goes towards harnessing the Talibans to fight the US and India.
China keeps Pakistan in good humour as a shield against India’s west and north interests. However, Pakistan is devoid of a vision aimed at economic, political and social prosperity. It is ruled by fundamentalists and an overambitious military. There is no trace of illustrious political leadership willing to look beyond Kashmir. The economy is in the doldrums. So the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other institutions will have to be more demanding with Pakistan, if they want it to mend its ways.
