There is a lot of kite flying in the media regarding this year's Bharat Ratna awards. Like the Nobel Prize, only living people or current organisations should be considered for the awards. When Kanshi Ram can be considered, why not E V Ramasamy Naicker, who pioneered the movement against the oppression of lower castes back in the twenties of the last century. In the category of a revolutionary or freedom fighter, one can think of none other than Subramania Bharathi. There are others who have done yeoman service to the country but their names have been long forgotten.
