A K Bhattacharya’s column “Finance ministry’s fiscal mess” (June 15) was interesting, but it did not examine the finance ministry’s lackadaisical approach towards tackling corruption. Along with pruning the fiscal deficit, the ministry also needs to plug leakages in the governance system. It should be noted that though oil marketing companies may have projected under-recoveries of around Rs 1.65 lakh crore in 2011-12, the revenue lost due to the deliberate undervaluation of 2G spectrum is around Rs 1.67 lakh crore. Thus, the article should have also focused on how leakages can be plugged instead of merely concentrating on how the finance ministry might fail to meet the fiscal deficit target of 4.6 per cent of GDP.
