This refers to “Warning signals for UPA” (October 19). The recent by-election results are on the expected lines. Hazare or no Hazare, Hisar was always a battle between Kuldeep Bishnoi and Ajay Chautala, the Congress candidate being a distant third. What should worry the Congress is that its candidate had to even lose his security deposit. In Andhra Pradesh, it was a referendum on the dilly-dallying tactics of the Congress on Telangana. In Bihar, the Congress was a non-starter from the start. Though three years is a long time in Indian politics, time is running fast for the Congress. And the worry about the Congress resorting to populist measures is not unwarranted since that seems to be the only rabbit left in its hat. The government should, however, not forget that it will only worsen the country’s fiscal deficit.
