Sunil Sinha’s “In a smog of its own making” (April 6) made interesting reading and was an eye-opener. So far, the impression given has been that India’s per capita carbon emissions are low and steady, whereas Sinha makes the point that industry is getting more polluting. To the extent India’s per capita emissions are steady, this is probably due to the low and declining share of industry in overall GDP. But now that the government is putting more emphasis on industry, our pollution levels could rise.
Someone in the government needs to explain how it plans to combat this rising menace. It is quite apparent that if too much emphasis is put on curbing pollution by using clean technology, several of these units will no longer be viable. How does the government plan to counter that?
