Apropos Surinder Sud's column "The nitty-gritty of nanotech" (Farm View, July 22), the vast unexplored world of nanotechnology has started to unfold even in advanced countries. It is time our universities and institutes initiated substantial research programmes on this high-potential subject. The most promising use of nano-particles is in the field of clinical research, particularly for the treatment of diseases such as cancer. Another important application, as mentioned by the writer, is in agriculture. We are still an agriculture-based economy and it is natural that we start investing in nanotechnology-based research programmes. But these projects are astronomically expensive and, therefore, we need a core team of learned scientists to decide the selection of projects.

Another important application of nano-particles is in the field of glass-coating technology to reduce the consumption of energy by air conditioners, and also to maximise the use of solar energy.
