This refers to the report “CERC guidelines soon to develop ancillary market for power trading” (July 2). It is a pity that several parts of the country are reeling under severe power crisis, as large capacities of power generation lie unused. We have huge idle capacities in the thermal power generating sector owing to the shortfall in domestic coal supply. These capacities can be put to use by importing coal, albeit at a higher cost. On the other hand, we have consumers (especially industrial and other bulk consumers) who will be ready to bear additional costs so that they are ensured continuous power supply. The ancillary market for trading of power will provide the right platform to iron out the mismatches in the system of supply and demand of power in the country.
