This refers to the report "Corrupt judge charge: BJP seeks answer from former PM" (July 22). Though Markandey Katju's startling allegation that a judge of the Madras High Court was given a two-year extension as additional judge by three Chief Justices of India (CJI) despite adverse reports by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) may sound inopportune, the issue of corruption in judiciary is very relevant. When a person of the stature of a retired Supreme Court judge raises the issue of corrupt judges, one can't help but sit up and take notice. Close on the heels of Gopal Subramanium's exclusion from the list of judges to be appointed to the Supreme Court, one hopes the uproar in Parliament over judicial appointments encourages the Narendra Modi-led government to set up a National Judicial Commission to select judges of unimpeachable integrity.
