It is sad news that millions in Chennai have been hit by floods due to torrential rain. Not long ago there were floods in Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat and Assam. But have we learnt any lessons from these calamities? We are abusing nature and paying for it. Reports say such heavy rain and floods are linked to global warming.
Heavy floods result in loss of human lives and destruction of property worth crores of rupees. The situation is slowly returning to normal in Chennai. Our first priority is to control the spread of epidemics. To prevent the recurrence of such floods, the government must take appropriate steps, for example an adequate drainage system to flush out floodwater.
